How Prefab Fireplaces Differ
A factory-built fireplace is listed to UL 127 and its metal chimney to UL 103. The listing covers the unit, its chimney and the clearances to framing as one system. That is why a factory built fireplace repair uses the maker's parts and follows the installation manual.
The rating plate, usually inside the firebox or behind a panel, gives the make and model. We use it to order the right parts.
Refractory Panel Replacement
Refractory panels line the firebox and protect the metal box behind them. Hairline cracks are normal; panels that crack through, crumble or leave metal exposed need refractory panel replacement. Metal fireplace repair also covers rusted grates, damper blades and doors.
Zero clearance fireplace repair is only safe with the listed parts. Firebrick or mortar from a masonry fireplace is not a substitute.
Metal Chimney Repair
The chimney above a prefab fireplace is a series of metal pipe sections joined together. Metal chimney repair replaces rusted or separated sections, loose joints and the termination cap. Prefab chimney repair also checks the fire stops and attic shield where the pipe passes through the house.

Signs This Work Is Due
Factory-built fireplaces are metal boxes lined with refractory panels, vented by a listed metal chimney. They are tested as a system, so repairs must use the maker's parts. We find the model, source the right panels, damper parts or chimney sections, and fix the unit without breaking its listing.
- Cracked or crumbling refractory panels
- Rust on the firebox walls or floor
- A damper that sticks or will not close
- Rust or gaps in the metal chimney pipe
What Sets the Price
- Parts availability
- Older models can be hard to source.
- Chimney sections needed
- Roof and attic access add time.
