Prefab and Zero Clearance Fireplace Installation
Many new wood-burning fireplaces are factory-built units. A zero clearance fireplace installation sets a metal firebox, listed to UL 127, into a framed wall with only the small clearances its maker allows, and connects it to a matching factory-built chimney listed to UL 103. The unit and the chimney pipe must come from the same listed system.
Prefab fireplace installation and prefab fireplace replacement follow the same rules. When an old unit wears out, we remove it with its chimney and install a current model with its own listed pipe, since parts from different makers are not interchangeable.
Masonry Fireplace Installation
A masonry fireplace installation is built on site from firebrick, block or brick and a masonry chimney. It is a bigger project and needs a proper footing, a correctly sized firebox and smoke chamber, and a hearth extension in front. Florida Building Code, Residential, Sections R1001 and R1003 set the details.
Masonry fireplaces suit new construction and major remodels. For most existing homes, a factory-built unit or an insert is the more practical route.
Chimney Pipe Installation and Clearances
Chimney installation for a factory-built fireplace means running the listed pipe up through the ceiling and roof, with fire stops at each floor, the right attic shield, and a termination cap at the listed height. Chimney pipe installation is where most of the clearance rules live, and we follow the maker's manual line by line.
On the roof, the pipe passes through a framed chase or a roof kit made for that chimney system. The top is finished with the listed cap.
Choosing a Fireplace Installation Company
A good fireplace installation company tells you what each option needs from the house before you choose. We look at the floor, the wall, the attic and the roof, then give you a written plan for a new fireplace installation. As a fireplace installer we also handle the permit conversation with the local building department where the work needs one.
Wood burning fireplace installation is our focus on this page. A fireplace install for gas or electric units follows different rules, covered on their own pages.

Questions We Hear Often
Can a fireplace be on the second floor?
Yes, a fireplace can go on a second floor. A factory-built wood unit or a direct vent gas unit is the usual choice, since a masonry fireplace needs a footing below it. The listed chimney pipe or vent then runs up through the roof with the clearances the maker requires.
Can a fireplace heat a whole house?
A wood fireplace heats the room it is in, and an open floor plan carries some of that warmth further. Open masonry fireplaces lose much of their heat up the flue. A wood insert or a gas unit with a blower moves far more heat into the house than an open firebox.
Does a fireplace add value to a home?
A working fireplace is a feature many buyers look for, especially in a living room. A fireplace that has not been inspected, or one with a cracked firebox or failed flue, can count against a sale instead. A clean inspection report is the best way to make it count in your favor.
Do you need a fireplace surround?
A fireplace surround is mostly a finish, but the materials near the opening must meet the clearances in the maker's manual or the building code. Combustible trim and mantels need set distances from the firebox; we check those distances before any surround or mantel goes up.
