Short version

Gas fireplace installation puts a new vented gas fireplace into a wall, a corner or an existing opening, connected to natural gas or propane. Our crew installs direct vent units to the maker's manual, sets the vent route and clearances, and leaves the fireplace tested and ready to use.

Direct Vent Gas Fireplace Installation

Direct vent fireplaces have a sealed glass front and a two-layer vent pipe. The inner pipe carries exhaust out, and the outer layer brings combustion air in from outside. Because the unit never uses room air, it can go on many outside walls with a short horizontal vent, or up through the roof.

A direct vent gas fireplace installation starts with the vent route, because the maker's manual sets the allowed lengths, turns and termination clearances from windows, doors and the ground. We plan the location around those rules.

New Gas Fireplace in an Old Opening

If you have an old wood-burning fireplace, a gas insert or a log set may be an easier route than a new built-in unit. Where a new gas fireplace is going into a fresh wall or a new room, we coordinate the framing, the gas line and the finish so the unit sits at the right height and clearances.

Gas supply work follows NFPA 54 as adopted in the Florida Building Code, Fuel Gas. Units are listed to ANSI Z21.88 or Z21.50, and we install them exactly as listed.

Natural Gas or Propane

Many units can run on either fuel with the right conversion kit and settings. Propane fireplace installation is common in homes without a gas main, using a tank and a regulator set by the supplier. We confirm the fuel before ordering so the unit arrives configured for it.

As a gas fireplace installer we test the gas connections for leaks, check the flame and the vent, and walk you through the controls before we leave. Where the local building department asks for a permit, we tell you before work starts.

What to Decide Before You Install Gas Fireplace Units

Before you install gas fireplace equipment, think about the room: how much heat you want, whether a TV will hang above it, and what finish you like around it. A gas fireplace install in a living room is a different plan from one in a bedroom or on a covered patio.

Questions We Hear Often

Does a gas fireplace need a chimney?

No, most new gas fireplaces do not need a masonry chimney. A direct vent unit uses a sealed two-layer pipe through an outside wall or the roof. A gas log set in an old wood fireplace does use the existing flue, which then needs its damper held open as the log set manual says.

Do I need a hearth for a gas fireplace?

Many direct vent gas fireplaces do not need a raised hearth, but the maker's manual sets the floor protection and clearances. Some units need a non-combustible base or hearth extension in front; we follow the manual for your specific unit when planning the finish.

Does a gas fireplace work without electricity?

Many standing-pilot gas fireplaces still light during a power outage, because the thermopile at the pilot makes its own small current. Blowers, electronic ignition and some remotes need power or batteries. Check the manual for your unit; some electronic ignition models have a battery backup.

Can a gas fireplace heat a whole house?

A gas fireplace heats the room it sits in well, and an open floor plan spreads that heat further. Heating a whole house depends on the burner rating, the vent type, the layout and the attic insulation; many people use one as zone heat for the main living space rather than as the only heat source.

Is a gas fireplace worth it?

A gas fireplace is worth it for many people who want a flame at the push of a button without wood, ash or sweeping. With a sealed glass front and a direct vent, it is cleaner and easier to run than a wood fire. The trade-off is less of the crackle and smell of real wood.
