What a Chase Cover Does
A chase is the boxed-in frame that hides a factory-built metal chimney on the outside of a house. The chase cover is the metal lid on top, with a collar where the flue pipe passes through. It keeps rain out of the chase and holds the termination cap and storm collar in place.
Flat covers made of thin galvanized steel are common on older chases. They sag, hold water and rust, and the rust runs down the siding and into the chimney. Factory-built chimneys are listed to UL 103, and their makers set the clearances and parts at the top; we follow those instructions.
Custom Chase Cover Replacement
We measure the chase top and the flue pipe and have a custom chase cover made to fit. A good cover has a raised center or cross-breaks so water runs off, a hemmed drip edge on every side, and a collar sized to the pipe. A stainless steel chase cover resists salt air and rust far better than galvanized steel.
Chase cover replacement includes removing the old cover, checking the top of the framing, fitting the new cover, and resealing the storm collar. The termination cap goes back on or is replaced if it is rusted.
Chase Cover Repair or a New Cover
Small issues like a loose storm collar or a missing screw can be handled with chase cover repair. When the metal has rusted through or sags into a dish, a new cover is the better fix. Chase cap replacement is the same job under another name; some people call the whole top a chimney chase cap.
If rot has reached the framing or siding of the chase, that work is a chimney chase repair, and we price it as a separate line.

What We Check For
- Rust on the siding below the cover
- The cover is rusting through. A stainless replacement stops it.
- Water pooling on top
- The cover is flat or sagging. A cover with a raised center sheds water.
- Soft siding near the top
- Water has reached the framing. We check the chase before fitting a new cover.

Questions We Hear Often
What is a chimney chase cap?
A chimney chase cap, also called a chase cover, is the metal top that closes a framed chimney chase. It has an opening for the flue pipe and a storm collar to seal it. A good one has a raised center and drip edges so rain runs off instead of sitting on top.
Can chimneys be made of wood?
Wood is used for the chase frame around a factory-built metal chimney, but never for the flue itself. The metal pipe inside is listed to keep the required clearance from the framing. The chase is clad in siding or stucco and topped with a metal chase cover to keep water out of the wood.
Why is my chase cover rusting?
Many rusting chase covers are thin galvanized steel that holds water on a flat top. Salt air and standing rain wear through the coating, and rust then streaks down the siding. A stainless steel cover with a raised center and drip edges avoids both problems.
