Short version
Gas fireplace venting carries exhaust out of the house and, on direct vent units, brings combustion air in. A technician inspects the vent pipe, joints and termination cap, then repairs or replaces direct vent and B-vent parts following the appliance maker's vent tables and NFPA 54.

How Gas Fireplaces Are Vented
Direct vent units use a pipe within a pipe: exhaust out through the inner pipe and fresh air in through the outer one, ending at a termination cap on a wall or the roof. B-vent units use a single-wall or double-wall pipe that carries exhaust up by natural draft, using room air for combustion. Vent-free units have no vent at all.
Each appliance's manual has vent tables that set the allowed lengths, turns and termination clearances. NFPA 54 as adopted in the Florida Building Code, Fuel Gas, applies too.
Direct Vent Fireplace Repair
Direct vent fireplace repair most often means a new direct vent termination cap, resealing separated joints, or replacing a crushed section in the attic. Direct vent pipe installation for a replacement run uses the same maker's pipe, since brands are not interchangeable.
Gas fireplace vent repair also covers termination clearances. A cap too close to a window, deck or new addition may need to be moved.
B-Vent Installation and Pipe Replacement
B vent installation on an older gas fireplace runs the listed pipe up through the house to a cap above the roof. B vent pipe replacement swaps rusted or separated sections. Gas fireplace vent pipe replacement of either type is finished with a draft and spillage check before we leave.
What We Check For
- Soot around the outside cap
- A combustion or vent problem. We check the burner and the run.
- Unit shuts off after a while
- Often a vent fault tripping the safety switch.
- New window near the cap
- Termination clearances may now be too short.
Parts and Materials We Use
- Maker's direct vent pipe
- Coaxial pipe and caps from the appliance maker.
- Listed B-vent pipe

Questions We Hear Often
How are gas fireplaces vented?
Gas fireplaces are vented one of three ways. Direct vent units use a sealed two-layer pipe through a wall or roof, B-vent units send exhaust up a listed pipe by natural draft, and vent-free units have no vent. The manual's vent tables set the lengths and clearances for each.
Does a gas fireplace need a vent?
Most gas fireplaces need a vent. Direct vent and B-vent units must vent outside as their manuals require; vent-free units are the exception, built with an oxygen depletion sensor and limited by their listing to certain rooms and run times.
Is vent-free gas better than vented?
Vented gas fireplaces send exhaust and moisture outside, which keeps indoor air cleaner. Vent-free units release their combustion products into the room, so their listings limit room size and hours of use. For a main living room, a direct vent unit is the usual choice in new installs.
Does a gas fireplace have a flue?
A gas log set in a masonry fireplace uses the chimney flue with the damper held open. A direct vent fireplace uses its own sealed vent pipe instead of a flue, while a B-vent unit has a metal flue pipe running up through the house.
Signs This Work Is Due
A gas fireplace is only as safe as its vent. Rusted termination caps, separated joints and crushed pipe can let exhaust back into the house or trip the unit's safety shutoff. We inspect the full vent run, then repair or replace pipe and caps using the maker's vent tables.
- Rust or damage at the outside vent cap
- Soot on the glass or around the cap
- The unit shuts off after running a while
- Vent pipe that is loose, crushed or separated
What Sets the Price
- Vent type and length
- Long or hidden runs take more work.
- Attic or roof access
- Hard access adds time.
