Why Fireboxes Crack
Firebrick is made to take heat, but every fire expands it and every cool-down shrinks it again. Over years, that movement opens joints and cracks bricks, especially on the back wall where the fire sits. Water coming down an uncapped flue speeds it up by softening the mortar.
Florida Building Code, Residential, Section R1001.5 sets the firebox wall requirements for masonry fireplaces. Cracks that open a path through the lining are the ones that matter most.
Fireplace Firebrick Replacement and Repointing
Firebrick repair starts by cutting out cracked or loose units and setting new firebrick in refractory mortar made for fireboxes, following the mortar maker's data. Fireplace mortar repair on open joints means raking out the old mortar and packing in new refractory mortar. Ordinary mortar does not belong in a firebox.
Fireplace brick repair on the face of the opening, outside the firebox, uses regular masonry methods, since it is not in the direct heat.
Firebox Rebuild
When the back or side walls bow, or many bricks have cracked through, a firebox rebuild lays a new firebrick lining. Cracked firebox repair at that point is not worth patching. A full fireplace rebuild, including the smoke chamber, is only needed when the structure behind the lining has failed.

Signs This Work Is Due
The firebox takes the direct heat of every fire. Its lining of firebrick and refractory mortar protects the masonry and framing behind it. When bricks crack, joints open or the back wall bows, that protection weakens. We replace damaged firebrick, repoint the joints, or rebuild the lining when it has worn through.
- Cracked or crumbling firebrick
- Mortar missing from the joints between firebrick
- A back wall that bows or leans
- Gaps where the firebox meets the hearth
What Sets the Price
- How many bricks are damaged
- A few units or whole walls.
- Access to the firebox
- Inserts or doors may need to come out first.
