Hearth and Hearth Extension
The inner hearth is the floor of the firebox. The hearth extension is the non-combustible area in front of the opening that protects the floor from sparks and embers. Florida Building Code, Residential, Sections R1001.9 and R1001.10 set how thick and how large it must be for a masonry fireplace.
Hearth extension repair is needed when the slab has cracked through, settled, or was built too small for the opening.
Cracked Hearth Repair and Tile
Cracked hearth repair on a sound slab means cleaning out the crack and filling it with a compatible material. Fireplace hearth repair where the slab has broken or settled means taking up the surface and rebuilding the base. Hearth tile repair and fireplace tile repair reset loose or broken tiles on a sound bed, in heat-rated setting materials where the tile sits close to the firebox.
Fireplace hearth replacement is the cleaner route when several tiles have failed and the bed underneath is loose.
Gaps at the Firebox
A gap between the inner hearth and the hearth extension, or between the hearth and the firebox wall, is a path for embers into the floor framing. Closing it with refractory mortar is a small job and one of the first things we check.
What We Check For
- Crack across the hearth
- Settlement or a thin slab. Filled if sound, rebuilt if loose.
- Loose tiles
- The bed has let go. Tiles are reset on a sound base.
- Gap at the firebox edge
- An ember path. Sealed with refractory mortar.
Parts and Materials We Use
- Hearth stone, brick or tile
- Matched to the existing finish where possible.

Questions We Hear Often
Can fireplace tile be painted?
Fireplace tile on the surround can be painted with a heat-rated paint made for the purpose, after cleaning and priming. Tile on the hearth floor and inside the firebox should not be painted, since foot traffic and direct heat make paint peel. Loose or cracked tiles are better reset or replaced before any finish goes on.

Signs This Work Is Due
The hearth in front of the fireplace catches sparks and rolling embers and protects the floor. Cracked slabs, loose tiles and gaps where the hearth meets the firebox all weaken that protection. We repair or replace the hearth and its extension so it stays solid and sealed.
- Cracks across the hearth
- Loose or broken hearth tiles
- A gap between the hearth and the firebox
- A hearth that looks too short for the opening
What Sets the Price
- Surface material
- Stone and custom tile take longer to match.
- Base condition
- A loose base means rebuilding.
