Short version

Stucco chimney repair fixes cracked, loose or hollow stucco on a chimney built of block or framed in a chase. St. Augustine Chimney & Sons sounds the stucco for hollow areas, removes what has let go, repairs the base it was stuck to, and applies new coats matched to the existing texture.

How Stucco Chimneys Fail

Stucco is a cement plaster applied in coats over block or over lath on a framed chase. ASTM C926 describes how portland cement plaster should be applied. Small shrinkage cracks are part of its life, but cracks that grow, run in steps or leave the surface hollow let water in behind the skin.

On a block chimney the water soaks the block. On a framed chase it reaches the wood framing, which is a different and more urgent problem covered on our chase repair page.

Chimney Stucco Repair Steps

Stucco chimney crack repair on a sound wall means opening the crack slightly, filling it with a compatible patching material and blending the texture. Where the stucco sounds hollow, we cut it back to sound edges, check the base, and apply new scratch, brown and finish coats.

Chimney parging, a thin cement coat over block or brick, is repaired the same way on a smaller scale. A full restucco chimney job is done when most of the skin has cracked or let go.

Matching Texture and Finish

Texture is what makes a patch show. We match the float or trowel finish of the existing stucco as closely as we can, and recommend painting the whole chimney face after a large repair so the colour is even. A breathable masonry paint is better than a heavy elastomeric film on block.

Signs This Work Is Due

Stucco over block is common on Florida chimneys, and hairline cracks are normal as it ages. Wider cracks, hollow patches and stucco that pulls away from the block let water in behind the skin. We patch what is sound, remove what has let go, and restucco with a matched texture.

  • Cracks wider than a hairline
  • Hollow sound when the stucco is tapped
  • Stucco bulging or falling off
  • Stains or soft spots at the base of the chimney

What Sets the Price

Area of stucco to replace
A few patches or the whole face.
Condition of the base
Damaged block or framing adds work.
