Chimney Mortar Repair Before It Becomes Brick Repair
Mortar is the sacrificial part of a brick wall. It is meant to wear and be renewed, so the brick does not have to be. Chimney mortar repair at the right time is a modest job; left too long, the same joints let water push the faces off the brick and loosen whole courses.
The top of the chimney wears fastest, since it takes the most sun and rain and often sits under a failing crown. We check that crown at the same time, because repointing below a leaking top only buys a little time.
How We Do Chimney Repointing
Chimney repointing starts with grinding or raking the old mortar out to a depth of about two to two and a half times the joint width, or until sound mortar is reached. The joints are cleaned and dampened, and new mortar is packed in layers so it fills fully. When the mortar firms up, we tool the joints to the same profile as the old work.
We pick the mortar type under ASTM C270 so it is not harder than the brick. Repointing chimney brick with a mortar that is too strong can crack the brick faces instead of the joint.
Tuckpointing Chimney Joints That Match
Colour matters on a visible chimney. We mix sample batches and compare them dry against the old joints, then use the closest match. New joints look a shade brighter for a few months and settle as they weather. Chimney mortar joint repair on just one face can be done without touching the others if they are sound.
What We Check For
- Recessed, sandy joints
- The mortar has eroded. Repointing restores the full joint.
- Cracked joints near the top
- Often water from the crown. We check and fix the top first.
- Bricks starting to move
- Joints have failed deeply. Some courses may need relaying.
Parts and Materials We Use
- Type N or Type O mortar
- Softer mortars chosen under ASTM C270 to suit older brick.
- Matched sand and pigment
- Used to bring the new joint colour close to the old.

Signs This Work Is Due
Mortar joints wear long before the brick does. Once they are sandy or recessed, rain gets behind the brick and the damage speeds up. Tuckpointing grinds out the worn mortar to a sound depth and packs in new mortar, tooled to match the old joints.
- Joints recessed behind the brick face
- Sandy mortar that crumbles when touched
- Gaps you can see light or daylight through
- Mortar crumbs on the roof or in the gutter
What Sets the Price
- How many joints need work
- One face or the whole stack.
- Height and roof access
- Steep or high roofs need more setup and safety gear.
