Why Chimney Bricks Spall

Brick is porous. Water that soaks in carries dissolved salts, and as the brick dries, those salts crystallise just under the surface. Over many cycles the pressure pushes the face off. Hard modern mortar can make it worse by forcing water to leave through the brick instead of the joints.

The usual water sources are a cracked crown, a missing cap, open mortar joints or a film-forming sealer that trapped moisture. Chimney brick spalling repair has to deal with that source or the new bricks will go the same way.

How We Replace Chimney Bricks

To replace chimney bricks, we cut out the mortar around each damaged unit, remove it in pieces without disturbing its neighbours, clean the opening and set a new brick in fresh mortar. Spalled brick replacement is done unit by unit, so sound bricks stay in place.

Cracked chimney brick replacement follows the same steps. Where several bricks in a row have failed near the top, relaying a short section may be faster and stronger than replacing them one by one.

Matching the Old Brick

Chimney brick replacement looks best when the new units match in size, colour and texture. We look for reclaimed brick or close modern matches, and we choose mortar under ASTM C270 that is no harder than the brick. Perfect matches are rare, but a careful choice blends in within a season or two.

Questions We Hear Often

How do you fix spalling brick on a chimney?

Spalling brick is fixed by cutting out each damaged unit and setting a new brick in compatible mortar. The water source behind the damage, usually the crown, cap or open joints, is repaired first. Sealing over spalled brick without replacing it does not stop the flaking.

Signs This Work Is Due

Spalling is the flaking or popping off of a brick's face, usually after years of water getting in and drying out. One spalled brick is cosmetic; a patch of them means water is getting in somewhere. We cut out the damaged units, set matched replacements and fix the water source behind them.

  • Brick faces flaking or crumbling
