Short version
Chimney flue repair fixes cracks, gaps and missing mortar in an existing clay flue liner. When the damage is limited, the crew repairs the joints or resurfaces the flue with a listed system. When too many tiles have failed, a new stainless liner is the safer choice.

Flue Tile Repair or a New Liner
Clay flue tiles crack from heat, age and settling, and the mortar joints between them can open up. A flue repair makes sense when the damage is limited and the rest of the flue is sound. When cracks run through many tiles, or tiles have shifted out of line, relining with a stainless liner is the more reliable fix.
We sweep the flue and look along its length before recommending either route. A chimney liner repair on a metal liner usually means replacing the damaged section or the liner itself.
Cracked Flue Tile Repair and Resurfacing
Cracked flue tile repair on a few joints can be done with a refractory mortar made for flue joints. Chimney flue resurfacing applies a heat-resistant coating along the inside of the flue to seal cracks and gaps. Resurfacing systems are tested and listed, often to UL 1777, and we follow the listed method exactly.
Chimney flue tile replacement of individual tiles is only practical near the top of the flue, where the tiles can be reached. Deeper damage is better handled by resurfacing or relining.
After a Chimney Fire
A chimney fire can crack tiles along much of the flue. NFPA 211 calls for an inspection after a chimney fire before the fireplace is used again. We check the full length of the flue and tell you whether flue repair is enough.

Questions We Hear Often
Can a chimney flue be repaired?
Yes, a chimney flue can often be repaired when the damage is limited to a few cracked tiles or open joints. Refractory mortar or a listed resurfacing system closes the gaps. When many tiles are cracked or out of line, a new stainless liner is the better fix.

Signs This Work Is Due
A few cracked flue tiles or open joints between them do not always mean a whole new liner. When most of the flue is sound, the damaged sections can be repaired or the flue resurfaced with a listed coating. We look at how far the damage runs before recommending either.
- Pieces of clay tile in the firebox
- Visible cracks or gaps in the flue
