Short version
A top sealing damper is a spring-loaded lid that mounts on top of the flue and seals against a gasket when closed. St. Augustine Chimney & Sons installs the chimney top damper at the crown, runs its control cable down to the firebox, and checks that it opens fully and seals tight.

How a Chimney Top Damper Works
A top mount damper is a metal lid on a spring, fixed to the flue tile or the crown. A stainless cable runs down the flue to a handle in the firebox. Pull the handle and the lid closes against a gasket; release it and the spring opens the lid fully for a fire.
Because it seals at the top, the whole flue stays closed off from the outside air when the fireplace is not in use. Many models include a screen, so the damper also acts as a cap.
Top Sealing Damper Installation
Top sealing damper installation starts with measuring the flue and the crown. The damper is set on the flue tile or mounted to the crown with sealant and fasteners, following the damper maker's instructions. The cable is run down the flue and fixed in the firebox where it is easy to reach.
Chimney top damper installation is a good fix when the old throat damper is too damaged to repair, or when a fireplace is rarely used and you want it sealed most of the year.
Decorative Gas Appliances and Top Dampers
A fireplace that holds a vented decorative gas appliance must keep its damper fixed open, as that appliance's own instructions require. A top damper can still be fitted in that case, but it has to be locked open. We check what is in the firebox before recommending one.
What We Check For
- Rusted throat damper
- A top sealing damper replaces its job without rebuilding the throat.
- Musty air from the fireplace
- Humid outside air drifting down. A gasketed top damper seals it out.
- Debris in the firebox
- The flue is open at the top. A top damper with a screen closes it.
Parts and Materials We Use
- Stainless or aluminum damper
- Sized to the flue tile or crown.
- Silicone gasket and cable
- Seal the lid and open it from the firebox.

Signs This Work Is Due
An old throat damper rusts, warps and lets humid air and insects drift down the flue. A top sealing damper sits on the flue at the crown, closes with a rubber gasket, and opens with a cable that runs down to the firebox. It also works as a cap when closed.
- A throat damper that is rusted, stuck or missing
- Humid air or odor drifting from the fireplace
- Insects or debris coming down the flue
- A damper that never seals completely
What Sets the Price
- Flue size and shape
- Larger or unusual flues need bigger models.
- Crown condition
- A cracked crown may need repair first.
